Oral or Mouth Cancer: Symptoms and Risk factors
Oral cancer, as the name says it appears inside oral cavity. Its not true, it can appear in any part of your mouth. Rather, I would like to say that it is a type of head and neck cancer and is any cancerous tissue growth located in the oral cavity.
Oral cancer appears as a growth or sore in the mouth, it can appear in tongue, gums, inside cheeks, floor of the mouth, throat or pharynx and even in sinuses.
Symptoms of Oral cancer :
The most common symptoms of oral cancer includes:
- Lumps or bumps, swelling or thickness or rough spots in any part of your mouth like gums, tongue etc,.
- Development of white and red patches inside the mouth.
- Unexpected bleeding from mouth.
- Sudden weight loss.
- Unexpected loss of feeling or pain in the mouth. Paralysis in the tongue and gums or any part of the mouth.
- Persistent sores in any part of mouth, neck, throat or ears.
- Difficulty in swallowing and chewing.
- Hoarseness or chronic sore throat and change in the voice.
- Suddenly loosing teeth and abnormal change in the structure of the teeth.
- Ear pain and soreness inside the ear.
Risk factors for the development of Oral cancer:
- Cigarette, cigar or pipe smokers are ten times more likely to develop cancer than non smokers.
- Users of dips, snuff or chewing tobacco products are 50 times more likely to develop cancers on their cheek, tongue, gums and lining of the lips.
- Excessive consumption of alcohol.
- Family history of cancer.
- Excessive sun exposure at the young age.
- Human Papillomavirus (HPV) stains are the etiological risk factors responsible for Oropharyngeal Squamous Cell Carcinoma (OSCC). OSCC is nothing but the disorder of ears, nose, throat and mouth.
